The area around Luyuanping is rich in mineral resources such as coal and sulfur. In 1930s, a sulfur plant was established by the local government and had been in operation for more than 90 years. Its annual output of sulfur was about 1700 tons, the production of which was at the cost of 1,840,000 tons of coals and sulfur ores. The job was done by 300 workers, each one of whom would carry 620 tons of weight annually on average, in addition to building furnaces and drilling wells. Besides, a transport team of 50 others were also formed, whose job was to carry the sulfur out of the valley with back baskets. The whole journey was about 3 miles, along which there was a staircase of 1,528 steps, with a height of over 400 meters, which is equal to a 140-storey building. Therefore, team members were always faced with the danger of falling into the valley. Here are the dormitories which used to accommodate the 300 sulfur-plant workers.
